Ethiopian Get together

Last night the Portland group of adoptive families from Ethiopia got together for a long awaited catch up. There was suppose to be 75 people attending. I don't know what the final count was, but the place was crazy with beautiful children running around everywhere. To think at our last get together in June we were still waiting for our referrals. Seems so long ago.
It was so wonderful to see everyone and how much their little ones have grown. Alec was on the move walking everywhere. Haven on the other hand I guess was a little overwhelmed by it all. She didn't really play much with the other children and when I was talking to a few other couples she found a mom to hold her. She walked up to Rebecca and plopped down on her and decided she was at home. I have to admit I was a little jealous. Haven wants to be held all day long and of course that is not possible, so she finds others to hold her.
This group of wonderful people helped me so much when Naing and I were in that horrible wait limbo. They are such a giving group of amazing people and it was so wonderful to see them all again.

Just a few recent pictures. Debbie gave them a tent and tunnel for Christmas and they have been having a ball with it. Life with two walkers has been a lot more challenging. I swear they are in cahoots!!

Day of firsts

This morning Haven put her leggings on by herself. Got the tag in the back and 1 leg in each hole and had them pulled 1/2 way up. Wow that is huge for her age. She was so proud of herself as I helped pull them up the rest of the way. She can put on her shoes and coat on by herself as well. Such a big girl. She also thinks it is her job to help wash Alec's hair in the bathtub and help hold his hand while he walks. Let me just say he is not to thrilled with her help at this point in his life.

Another first that happened is Alec fed himself yogurt with a spoon this morning. This is the first time he has showed interest in trying to feed himself. He was so proud of himself, such a big boy. He has also started patting my back when I hold him and says MaMa, just melts my heart. But the boy is not all sweet and cuddly like he used to be, he has become a screamer and a climber. He screams this high pitch scream when he is stuck and can't figure out how to get where he wants to go. VERY loud boy, working on turning down the volume. He has started climbing, yep climbing. Tonight while I was making dinner he was standing on his push toy trying to climb onto the chair I had pulled into the kitchen for Haven to watch me cook. When I turned around, yikes there he was teetering on the push toy. He did climb onto a bench at my old clinic by himself today. My how he has changed in just a short period of time.

Grandma

Haven now takes the picture of my Mom and says Grandma and gives it a kiss. It just melts my heart. I am so glad my Mom came to see my children and it made an impression on Haven. My Mom is 87 years old and has always been an amazing Grandma to all my nieces and nephews. I wanted my children to have that experience. I know my Mom will not see my children all grown and it breaks my heart. I just hope that my children have fond memories of her when the are older. Makes me realize how important this visit was and I need to make a visit with them to Texas a priority. My Mom said that was her last trip, it has been just too much for her to get adjusted back at home after traveling.
It is the same for Naing's parents they are 90 and 86 years old. For now our vacations need to be visiting family so our children can experience the joy of grandparents. God willing they will be here to enjoy Haven and Alec for a long time.

New words

Alec's new words, the boy is catching up on his vocabulary:)
bye bye, please (so cute when he says peeas):), hat, eye, nose, hot, baby.
He had his 1 year check up and he is now 20 pounds and 13 oz and is 30 1/2 inches in length. Yeah. He also took 3 unassisted steps in the Dr. office. I am excited for him, but dread him walking too. Yesterday I found him taking the plug covers out with Haven cheering him on. Yikes now they both are doing this. We bought the face plates that turn when you pull the plug out so the socket is not live, but still scares me.

Haven's new words, hope I don't forget any.
toudaloo, just a minute, now, time out, second, book, hat, good girl, good boy, duck, quack, juice, banana (nana). I know I'm forgetting some. She continues to amaze me with her brillance. When we were in the Dr office she was touching things and I asked her to stop and keep her hands to herself. Then the nurse came in with a push cart to weigh and measure Alec. She was all over it, touching. I made the utt utt sound and then said Haven what did I just tell you, she put her hands on her hips and went utt, utt. Yep she is cheeky.
